A

Acidulent
Item somewhat acid or harsh in taste or manner.

Ad hoc
Formed or used for specific or immediate problems or needs, such as an ad hoc legislative committee.

Admiralty
The court having jurisdiction over questions of maritime law; the system of law administered by admiralty courts.

Affidavit
A written declaration under oath made before an authorized official.

Agrarian
Promoting agricultural interests.

Agriculture
The production, processing, and distribution of food and fiber.

Antitrust
Consisting of laws to protect trade and commerce from unlawful restraints and monopolies or unfair business practice.

Arable
Capable of producing crops.

Arbitrary
Depending on individual discretion and not fixed by law; existing or coming about seemingly at random or by chance or as a whimsical and unreasonable act of will.

Asia Minor
Peninsula forming the western edge of Asia bordered by the Black Sea to the North, the Mediterranean Sea to the South, and the Aegean Sea to the West.

Asset
The total resources of a person or business, as cash, notes and accounts receivable, securities, goodwill, or real estate (as opposed to
liability).

Attache
A diplomatic official or a military officer assigned to an embassy or mission in a foreign country, especially in a technical capacity.

Attitude
A person's frame of mind, opinion, or temperament about an issue.

Barter
To trade one commodity for another, without using money.

Belief
Something accepted as truth, especially a religious creed or doctrine.

Beneficiary
The person, group, or company designated to receive payments.

Boycott
Absolute restriction against the purchase and importation of certain goods from other countries.

C

Capital
The wealth, as in money or property, available to be invested in a business.

Cargo
The load of goods carried by a ship, airplane, etc.

Carrier
An individual or company engaged in transporting goods for profit.

Collectivized Farm
Farm especially in a communist country formed from many small holdings collected into a single unit for joint operation under government supervision.

Commodities
Any product traded or sold.

Comparative Terms
Adjectives or adverbs used to show an increase in quality, quantity, or intensity, such as best, better, most, or more.

Consignment
Property sent to an agent for sale. The reseller pays only for what is sold and may return anything unsold.

Consumer
The person who personally uses or consumes a good or service.

Container
A large, vanlike, reusable box that can be packed with pallets or smaller crates and transported intact through all points of transfer.

Custom
The usual and expected way of doing something.

Debarkation
Usually "Point of Debarkation" - the point where goods are finally unloaded.

Debit
Remove money from a bank account. In this instance transfer payment from the importer's account to the exporter's account.

Developed
Having a relatively high level of industrialization and standard of living.

Domestic
Within your own country.

E

Economic
Related to money. Also used to refer to the least costly, as in "the economic choice."

Endorsement
To express approval or support of; to write (something) on the back of a document or paper.

Enterprise
A company organized for commercial purposes.

Ethnocentric
Characterized or based on the attitude that one's own group is superior.

European Union
An institutional framework for the construction of a united Europe, economically, legislatively, judicially, and socially. It includes the countries of Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Finland, and Sweden.

Export
Having to do with the shipment of commodities to other countries.

Extruded
To force, press, or push out; to shape (as metal or plastic) by forcing through a die.

Franchising
The right or license granted to an individual or group to market a company's goods or services in a particular territory.

Geopolitical
A combination of geographic and political factors defining a region.

Global
Something that involves the whole world.

Goal
An object or end that a person or community is working toward.

Gross National Product (GNP)
The total dollar value of all goods and services produced in a country in a year.

I

Idea
The mental perception of a thing as opposed to its reality.

Idiom
An expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual grammatical rules of a language or from the usual meanings of its constituent elements, such as kick the bucket meaning "to die".

Import
Having to do with bringing commodities in from a foreign country.

Incidental
Incurred casually and in addition to the regular or main amount.

Indigenous
Native to a particular region or country.

Indochina
Peninsula in southeast Asia, including the countries of Myanmar (formerly Burma), Cambodia, Laos, the Malay Peninsula, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Indo-European
Common to most areas of Europe and the parts of the world colonized by Europeans since 1500 and also in Persia, the subcontinent of India, and other parts of Asia.

Industrialization
The introduction of large-scale trade or manufacture.

Inflation
An increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods and services resulting in a continuing rise in the general price level.

Infrastructure
The basic facilities serving an area: transportation and communication systems, power plants, roads.

Intermediary
An agent or agency situated between two persons or parties; a go-between or mediator.

Intermodal
Pertaining to transportation involving more than one form of carrier, as truck, ship, and rail.

Jurisdiction
The power, right, or authority to interpret and apply the law and to exercise authority; the limits or territory within which authority may be exercised; the authority of a sovereign power to govern or legislate.

L

Latino
A person of Latin American nationality or descent.

Law
Any rule or principle expected to be observed. Written laws are enforced by an established authority structure.

Levy
To impose a tax, fine, or other penalty.

Liability
The sum total of all debt or monetary obligations (opposed to
assets); something disadvantageous.

Licensing
Permission granted by competent authority to engage in a business or occupation; legal right to use a patent owned by another.

M

Maritime
Of, relating to, or bordering on the sea or relating to navigation or commerce on the sea.

Monopoly
The exclusive control of a commodity or service that makes possible the manipulation of prices.

Morals
Principles of right and wrong.

N

Negotiate
To bargain with someone until terms (of sale) are agreed upon.

Niche
A distinct segment of a market.

Norms
Principle of right action binding upon the members of a group and serving to guide, control, or regulate proper and acceptable behavior.

Nuance
A subtle difference or distinction, as in meaning.

Oilseeds
A seed or crop from which an oil is expressed, includes flaxseed, castor bean, sesame, or cottonseed.

Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries

Patents
The exclusive right granted to an inventor to manufacture or sell an invention for a specified number of years.

Per capita
Per unit of population.

Permafrost
Permanently frozen layer at variable depth below the surface in frigid regions of a planet

Persia
Country currently known as Iran; in southwest Asia bordered by the Caspian Sea to the North and the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman to the South.

Pesticide
Agent to destroy animals or plants detrimental to humans or human concerns.

Plight
A distressing condition or situation.

Practice
A frequent or usual action, habit, or method.

Preventive Maintenance
Steps or repairs done in advance to prevent harm to property or equipment by performing proper upkeep and repairs.

Procurement
To get possession of or obtain by particular care and effort

Product
The final commodity or service provided for trade.

Protectionist
Government economic protection for domestic producers through restrictions on foreign competitors.

Provisional
Temporary; conditional.

A crop grown for its large roots, includes potatoes, turnips, beets, carrots, and onions.

Sector
A distinct part of society or of a nation's economy.

Self-sufficient
Able to maintain oneself or itself without outside aid; capable of providing for one's own needs.

Semites
A member of any number of peoples of ancient southwestern Asia, including the Akkadians, Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Arabs.

Slurry Handling System
A waste removal system.

Sophistication
The level of knowledge the customer has of the market and products available both domestically and internationally.

Standard of Living
A level of subsistence and comfort in daily life maintained by a community, class, or individual.

Strategic
Essential to the conduct of a war.

Subsidiary
A company wholly controlled by another.

Subsistence
Producing just enough to maintain life.

Tenets
A principle, belief, or doctrine generally held to be true; one held in common by members of an organization, movement, or profession.

Territoriality
Pattern of behavior associated with defense of a territory.

Trade
The act or business of buying, selling, or exchanging commodities.

Trademark
A device (such as a word) pointing distinctly to the origin or ownership of merchandise to which it is applied and legally reserved to the exclusive use of the owner as maker or seller

Tradition
A long-established custom or practice that has the effect of an unwritten law.

U

Underdeveloped
Having a relatively low level of industrialization and standard of living.

Urbanization
Taking the characteristics of a city.

Value
A social principle, goal, or standard held or accepted by a person or community.

Vernacular
The native speech or language of a place; the plain variety of language in everyday use by ordinary people.
