Agribusiness in a Global Environment Lesson 2
Activity - Export/Import Research

You are considering starting your own business of exporting goods to your pen pal's country. But before you can make a wise decision about this opportunity, you need some basic foundational information.

As a potential exporter, you won't want to try to sell them something they already have, especially something they are exporting - they have an excess of those products! Nor will you want to compete too much with established companies who have saturated that market with THEIR exported products. So you need to be familiar with the current import / export situation of that country.

Also, since you are located in the USA, it would be helpful for you to know how the US factors in the country of interest's foreign trade - are the imports from the US? Is the US a buyer of their exports?

As usual in starting a new business, you will need to borrow some money. Your bank's loan officer, Mr. U.C. Money wants to see some "proof" that your proposed business will succeed, and one of the documents he's asked for is a special worksheet, showing the current international trade situation of the foreign country.

Your teacher has set up an appointment for you to meet with Mr. Money, at which time you will need to have the worksheet completed.

Some excellent resources can be found on the World Wide Web. Check out the resource page.
